Earthfall – Earthfall Review

Earthfall review by ObsoleteChallenger

Score 8/10

Introduction

Earthfall, published and developed by Holospark, is a cooperative survival based first-person-shooter. Earthfall is best enjoyed with up to four players but if you’re more solo, that is an option. It is now available on Steam in Early Access, for feedback from players to help the developers improve on the game for a better experience. Use a wide variety of weaponry to blast through the hordes of aliens to complete mission objectives. Earthfall runs on the Unreal Engine for stunning graphics and gameplay.

Gameplay

Play in a game with up to four people or play solo if that is your style. You can choose from four of the main story characters, Maya, Roy, Danny and Jonas, in a variety of locations the game provides for you; These maps being: Supply Run, Breakdown, Data Retrieval, Radio Silence, Revelation and The Diversion, and the developers have promised more maps to come. The player can also choose from a variety of difficulties, the highest being “Overwhelming”. It is recommended that you play through the game on Regular difficulty to full explore the map, however if you want a challenge then the Overwhelming difficulty is for you.

Once you’ve entered the game, you will be automatically equipped with a pistol, but you can explore the map to find other weapons of varying strength. Depending on the map you have chosen, you will have to complete a host of objectives to find the escape from death. Scattered around the map and objective locations are multiple defensive items you can use to protect yourself, from barricades you can use to reinforce the place you’re in to med kits you can use on yourself or others.

Along the way, you will be granted access to lore that you can read via the main menu, which lists the causes leading to the alien invasion and information about the different kinds of aliens you will be exposed to. This lore will also grant you information on the most effective way to defeat an enemy, which typically involves a few gunshots to the head. However, there are special enemies with special strengths that can kill you easily if you’re not careful. You may try and outsmart the aliens, but with their intelligent spawning AI, they may end up getting the upper hand on you. No need to worry as if you’re playing solo though, since there will still be the AI controlled teammates to back you up if you need them.

One of the coolest aspects in your favor is the Weapon Printer. Yes, a weapon printer… You can use this to print different weapons of great strength as well as barricade kits that you can use to protect your team. You can also use turrets that have an auto targeting toggle to your advantage and spray down all the incoming hostiles. With a combined four players, you are guaranteed to rain havoc on the alien scum.

Graphics and Music

The graphics for Earthfall are stunning and are complimented by atmospheric music. You will know when you are in danger when the music switches from a less peaceful tone to a ‘you’re in danger… run’ tone. You can easily be caught up in the beautiful scenery surrounding each of the maps. Each environment is different from the other maps; some are cold, dark and wet, while others being warm, sunny and dry. You’re sure to be immersed as you go around slaughtering aliens.

Conclusion

In conclusion, if you enjoy a lush, scenic environment while mowing down millions of aliens whilst being protected by a host of defenses, then Earthfall is a game for you. Survive with friends, or alone that is your choice. If you want a harder challenge, and a more immersive one, then playing with friends is the best choice. If you’re not into lore, that is fine just run through the game, completing objectives and hope that you escape before you and your team are annihilated by the alien onslaught.
With all things considered, this game is great. It is a fantastic first-person-shooter experience and it is guaranteed you will have fun. It has been a great experience reviewing this game and cannot wait to see what Holospark has in store for future updates. The final rating for this game is: 8/10
